Notes The Vlei has recently begun to receive water and to rehabilitate as a water feature. Artificial islands have been introduced for water birds and the water source is said to have been sorted out so that there should always be water in the vlei. The bird life is returning and compared to our observations of a few weeks back, many more water birds are to be seen on and around the vlei. The species that was a surprise was the presence of a group of Fulvous Ducks resting on the bank of one of the islands. Very clear observation of the colour and markings of the 5 birds left us in no doubt as to the species. We are familiar with the Fulvous Duck and have no doubt at all about the identification even though far from their normal habitat. Telescope observation was excellent, but too far for our camera to get any useable picture.
