Newsletter 16 — June 2000

Dear CWACers,

Summer 2000 count

The beginning of the new millennium marked the seventeenth count for CWAC. Results show that the flooding that occurred in the northern half of the country has had an impact on both the counts and waterbird populations. In total 249 410 waterbirds were counted from 239 sites - the overall total being comparatively lower than both the Summer 1999 (304 343) and Winter 1999 (324 034) figures. The heavy rain that caused extensive flooding of some sites resulted in zero counts or no counts at these sites, some of which usually hold significant amount of waterbirds.

Large amounts of water in the surrounding landscape, particularly in ephemeral and seasonal pans, were evident. The results suggest that waterbirds were more dispersed and widespread than usual. There are literally thousands of these wetlands which remain uncensused. CWAC, through regular long-term monitoring, can help to highlight the role of temporary wetlands in waterbird ecology, and provide some quantitative answers.

12 sites were counted for the first time and included six from the Western Cape (Soetendalsvlei, Bellair Dam, Gourits River: Mouth - Low water bridge, Goukou River: Mouth - Cobb Hole, Duiwenhoks River: Mouth - Melkhoutkraal and Slent Farm Dam), three from the Northern Cape (Pudu Farm Dam, Marrick Pan and Holpan/Graspan Pans) and one each from Mpumalanga (Kanhym Pan 4), Northern Province (Naboomspruit Sewage Works), and Eastern Cape (Bushmans River: Mouth - Ghio Bridge).

Breeding data

Judging from the summer 2000 forms, there has been a favourable response to the breeding information sections that were introduced in this count. We hope that more and more counters will contribute to this part of the census. This information will help monitor breeding activity at the sites and may just reveal as yet unknown breeding sites for some of our lesser known waterbirds.

River counts

We are excited to have received some new count information from three rivers in the Western Cape (Gourits, Goukou and Duiwenhoks) and one in the Eastern Cape (Bushmans River). These counts have been initiated by Mr Mossie Basson (Cape Nature Conservation) and Tony Tree (ADU Research Associate) respectively. Very little is known about waterbird densities and diversity on rivers in South Africa - the lower Orange River is the only South African river which has been studied extensively in this regard.

We have already received indication from Dr Henk Bouwman and Dr Andr‚ Vosloo at Potchestroom University that they will be surveying a section of the Vaal River Important Bird Area (IBA) this coming winter, while a member of the Phalaborwa Bird Club is keen to get involved with counting a 12 km stretch of the Olifants River. This is encouraging and we would like to motivate other compilers or observers to get involved with counts on rivers.

Highlights - Summer 2000

Counting rallids by Duncan Mackenzie

Owing to the high numbers of African Rail and Redchested Flufftail counted at Klipfontein Bird Sanctuary we asked compiler Duncan Mackenzie to share some of his counting skills for these palustrine species:

Rallids are probably the most undercounted of all families of birds recorded during the CWAC counts. They are not all as rare as believed though, and some are actually quite common. The trick is to know what to look for, and how to look for it. Here are a few pointers:

May trip

Doug's PR trip to the northern half of the country during May was a tremendous success. After leaving Cape Town on 8 May, he travelled to the Free State, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Northern Province and Northern Cape, returning to Cape Town on 2 June, 4500˙km later. During the trip he gave presentations to various bird clubs and met with various bird club management committees, compilers and counters. Doug promoted CWAC (and other ADU projects), discussed ways to improve coverage and consistency, and visited many registered and potential CWAC sites. It was encouraging to see a lot of enthusiasm from two recently established clubs, Phalaborwa and Pietersburg Bird Clubs, as these clubs are in regions where CWAC needs to expand. In fact, on returning to Cape Town, Doug received a fax from Phalaborwa Bird Club to register one of the wetlands surveyed while he was in Phalaborwa. The Pietersburg club have also indicated that they will be registering two wetlands shortly. It was also during the trip that two more Regional Organisers were appointed (see below) and we are confident that this will strengthen CWAC in these poorly covered regions.

Birding highlights from the trip included a breeding colony of about 300 pairs of Whitebreasted Cormorants nesting in blue gums at Barberspan Nature Reserve, 2500-3000 Lesser Flamingo on a pan just outside Delareyville, seeing the enormity and complexity of the Blesbokspruit Ramsar site, discovering a large (200-300) Cattle Egret roost on a return-water dam at one of the mines in Phalaborwa (Phalaborwa Mining Company), and counting about 3000 Blacknecked Grebe on Kamfers Dam, just outside Kimberley - probably the largest count made of this species at the dam. Overall, the trip was a great opportunity to meet with some of the existing compilers, most of whom Doug knew only from letters, count forms or e-mails, and to see some of the CWAC wetlands. A lot of new contacts were also made and hopefully some of them will become new compilers in the future. Doug would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all the various people who accommodated him on his trip - it made it that much more enjoyable and contributed to its success. He hopes to be visiting the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal towards the end of the year, or during 2001.

Site Description Form

In the last newsletter (No. 15) we mentioned that a Site Description Form (SDF) would be produced to collect detailed ecological and management information on sites. The SDF will include a section on wetland classification, an aspect which has proven to be complicated and often ambiguous. Since the last newsletter, we have been in contact with Dr Barry Taylor who is currently preparing a training manual for the African Waterbird Census (AfWC). This manual will provide compilers and counters in all participating African countries with a practical, easy to use guide to waterbird and wetland monitoring and includes aspects such as wetland classification, monitoring techniques and management options. Since there is a large degree of overlap between the AfWC training manual and our SDF, we have decided to postpone production of the SDF and see whether the training manual could serve the purposes of CWAC in SA.

Regional Organisers

We are happy to announce that CWAC now has three additional Regional Organisers (ROs); they are Boudewyn van der Lecq (Greater Gauteng), Lientjie Cohen (NE Mpumalanga) and Joe Grosel (Pietersburg district). Boudewyn has been the CWAC coordinator for the Wits Bird Club for the past couple of years and has managed to establish a core group of enthusiastic counters within the club. He works for a construction company in Johannesburg but he informs us that he prefers constructing routes and planning counts for CWAC. He took up his RO role at the beginning of the year. Lientjie has recently taken over as CWAC coordinator at the Escarpment Bird Club, a satellite club of the Lowveld Bird Club, based in Lydenburg. She works for the Mpumalanga Parks Board doing research on small mammals and has been involved with CWAC counts for the past two years. She is keen to develop her waterbird skills and knowledge. Joe is a member of the recently established Pietersburg Bird Club and works in the Parks and Recreation Department of the Pietersburg/Polokwane Transitional Local Council where his primary duties include managing all the local game and nature reserves and other green areas in and around Pietersburg. Joe is an experienced birder and participates regularly in the Birds In Reserves Project (BIRP). The ADU would like to warmly welcome our three new ROs and wish them every success in promoting CWAC.

The aim of establishing ROs is to help promote and maintain CWAC on a regional basis, thereby striving to attain better coverage and consistency. Anyone wishing to become an RO can contact Doug for further details - a Terms of Reference document is available outlining the requirements and duties of ROs. Regions where ROs are needed include the western parts of the Northern Province, western parts of the North West, southern Mpumalanga and northern and central parts of the Eastern Cape.

Personality profiles

As from the next issue we are planning to introduce a regular section profiling certain CWAC compilers and observers. After eight years of CWACing we feel that the compilers should be allowed to make their comments heard to all CWACers - a way of acknowledging them for their efforts and commitment to the project. It will probably take the form of a question and answer format (how long have you been involved with CWAC?, why do you take part in the project?, etc.) and should provide an informal medium through which the project's leading lights can share ideas and experiences with other CWACers. We will be contacting candidates in due course.

Winter 2000 count

Please remember that the timing of this count is any time during the month of July with the preferred dates being the middle weekend (Saturday 15th or Sunday 16th), or as close to these days as possible.
